Homeowners associations are often stereotyped as being high maintenance and snobby. Of course, not all HOAs are like that, but many of them are notorious for this very reason. If you’ve ever lived in a community that had an HOA, you probably know about their weirdly specific rules all too well. 

Some HOAs require a live green lawn. Others prohibit certain flowers or colors in your garden. There are even communities that prohibit residents from growing crops and herbs! It’s a bit too much for people who don’t like to be told what to do (aka Americans). Maybe HOAs will become more laid-back in the future. Or maybe they’ll just stay exactly the same, because some things never change.
