Many people try to adopt more sustainable shopping habits to help reduce fashion waste and overspending. However, one of the biggest “hacks” that people assume reduces fashion waste isn’t sustainable at all. Many of us are under the impression that outlet stores sell excess stock from popular up-scale stores. For example, Nordstrom Rack sells leftovers from Nordstrom stores, right?
Wrong. Most outlet stores are their own separate entity, buying up their own stock of clothing, accessories, shoes, and more. While shopping at an outlet is much more affordable, it’s not preventing fashion waste from going to the landfill. The clothing produced for outlets is usually of lesser quality, which is how they can sell it for less money.
